Will a sub 2:00 Marathon Ever Be Run?

Given Kiptum’s young age he will surely be someone to watch as he attempts to one day break the unheard of 2 hour threshold. How likely is that, and if so, when could we expect that to happen? Over the past decades, there have been many improvements made in the sport of running. From technology changes like shoes and apparel, to nutrition changes like supplements/fueling and hydration, to training programs like strength/conditioning programs and cross-train options, athletes have been able to consistently improve their times. We can model this on a historical timeline to help us predict the future. Here is an interesting graph that helps show this, using statistical modeling based on the blue dot WR markers prior to 2020

Now if this predictive model is regenerated using the 2 most recent record times from 2022 and 2023, making those times less extraordinary because they were actually achieved, it looks like this.

So with this newer model, the expected arrival of a sub-2 marathon is projected to happen by 2027. And if the progression line was extended out into the indefinite future, it indicates that the best possible achievable time is close to 1:55.

Good Times

New Marathon World Record set

Kevin Kiptum, a 23 year old from Kenya, completed the Chicago Marathon last month in the amazing time of 2:00:35, bettering the previous world record marathon time held by the legendary Eliud Kipchoge by 34 seconds.

It's the first time the marathon world record has been obliterated by more than 30 seconds since official ratification began 20 years ago. His time was 3:27 faster than the 2nd place finisher.

Using Nike Dev 163 prototype shoes, this is a reminder of how much supershoe technology is changing the sport (maybe if I bought new shoes….).

He did not start the race intending to break the record but that changed after he completed Mile 22 in 4:18, an amazing 14 mph pace. He had not even run a marathon until 10 months ago.
